24-01-09 TMC Announcements | Cold Weather, Black Excellence Day, Pink Shirt Day, Non-Instruction Day
Dear TMC Titan Students, Parents and Guardians,
What a great start to our week, and we are getting back into the swing of things! With weather like we had at the start of January, who can complain! J
Cold Weather Warnings
But… The cold weather is coming back! Thursday has a high of -23°C and a low of -30°C. Please remind your students to be smart and safe and how they dress for coming to school. Our doors open at 8:15 AM for students to come in, so please do not send the kids to school before that. As we live in Calgary, and weather conditions can change drastically between the start of a morning and nutrition, break or lunch, your students should always be prepared to go outside. We use a guideline of -20°C as to whether we stay in for an indoor nutrition break or an indoor lunch. If it is warmer than that, we will go outside and enjoy this wonderful Calgary weather! Thanks and be safe over the next few coming really cold days.
Black Excellence Day
January 15, 2024 is Black Excellence Day (was Black Shirt Day), which started in 2021 commemorating the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. "Black Excellence Day" is both a day of education and remembrance, and an invitation to a conversation about racial injustice. We continue to educate students on issues such as these, and this is why I love public school, as we have students of every race, religion, creed and colour, and my belief is that the more kids see diversity, the more normal it becomes to accept and be understanding of racial differences.
TMC Pink Shirt Day 2024 – Wednesday February 28, 2024
Our Grade 8 Leadership Students and Leadership Teachers will be utilizing Pink Shirt Day as a leadership and learning opportunity for all students at TMC School. In 2007, “David Shepherd, Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied [for wearing a pink shirt]… [They] took a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school. ‘I learned that two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders,’ says Mr. Price, 17, who organized the pink protest. ‘Finally, someone stood up for a weaker kid.’ So Mr. Shepherd and some other headed off to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag. As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. ‘It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders,’ Mr. Price recalled. From the Globe & Mail
Reminder – Monday December 15, 2023 Non-Instruction Day for all CBE Schools
