23-09-21 TMC Announcements
Dear Titan families,
A huge THANK YOU goes out to all of our students, parent and staff on such an amazing and positive first few weeks to the 2023-24 school year in creating a welcoming learning environment! TMC School and the CBE strive to ensure that all our schools are welcoming, safe, respectful, and caring places for each and every one of our students and staff. As a public school, we welcome and celebrate students from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and beliefs, and we have students of every background, perspective and belief come join us here every day to learn and grow.
We embrace diversity and offer universal supports for every student. Each and every day we work to prevent racism, increase representation of our diverse communities in learning resources, eliminate unnecessary gendered language and spaces, recognize that ableism is a barrier to inclusive environments, and seek to learn about and celebrate the diverse backgrounds of all those who comprise the CBE.
Here at TMC School, we have honoured and recognized our unique community with events such as the upcoming Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and last year had all kinds of events such as the Terry Fox Run, a Halloween Spirit Day, Remembrance Day and Veteran's Week, World Kindness Day, Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, Christmas/Winter Spirit Week, Bell Let's Talk Day/Mental Health Week, Valentine's Spirit Week, Pink Shirt Day, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Earth Day, Hats On for Mental Health Day, Mental Health Week, National Indigenous Peoples Day and other learning opportunities. We also had our first TMC/BHS Pride Day last year on June 1 organized by our TMC GSA.
TMC School reaffirms our commitment to creating safe and caring learning and work environments for every member of our community, including our 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff. The Education Act in Alberta specifies that students are entitled to “welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments that respect diversity and nurture a sense of belonging and a positive sense of self.” Recognizing different events and celebrations is one such way we contribute to welcoming, caring, respectful and safe environments. Classroom-based activities and lessons that promote diversity and inclusion are not subject to exemptions under the Education Act (such as the Human Sexuality unit in the Alberta Health Program of Studies where parents can have their child excluded.)
Every student should have the opportunity to succeed personally and academically regardless of background, identity or personal circumstances. We acknowledge that each family and community have a unique experience with different recognitions and celebrations, and any commemorative activities in our schools may be perceived differently, as we all have our own core family beliefs.
I love that our country has amazing diversity which continues to grow every day, and I am such a believer in the concept of Public School supporting each and every single student to be able to come to a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment, even if some of us old people still like to wear buckles and cowboy hats! J As growing and developing human beings, who do make mistakes, we are always working to help them learn to be excellent and respectful citizens.
As I say, everyone is welcome at TMC, a public school! Have an amazing night and I hope to see you tonight at our Meet the Teacher evening!
